Exoskeleton, refrigerator, "locker". All together - Power Armor. We're forced to talk in this short "article" about it. Well, primarily about its sizes.
It's the most frequent question/exclamation/scream that we get. Like, it's a walking tank, it should be enormous, big, broad-shouldered and generally not like that. Like, when the hero of the old Fallouts wore a set of power armor, he turned into a giant gorilla. Loudest groans sound, of course, to the power armor of 3D-Fallouts, I mean Fallout 3 & Fallout New Vegas. Be that as it may, we can agree with them on one only thing: there is no additional set motion animation for such dimensions and, importantly, with certain restrictions in the armors' movement. As to the cries that it should be wider, Wider, WIDER - let's look at the picture:
Painful, isn't it? It is logical to assume that removing limbs from the body will cause some discomfort for the person wearing it, not to mention the problems of joining back and bleeding, not quite compatible with a long life. That is why the power armor must be either very durable exoskeleton (though sometimes a little wider than it is in 3D fallouts), or something so major that people can be freely placed inside the carcass completely connected to the servo.
Now we move on to the famous cry of that power armor, especially APA (yes-yes, THAT APA with yellow "squinted" eyes), should be much broader in the shoulders. But we begin with its predecessor, namely power armor T-51b. We have seen it many times, starting from the main menu of the first part, ending with the slides of BoS, on the BoS's paladins, with whom ever to communicate (by the way, they have completely replaced shoulders), and even in the loading slides wore by savages in a state where things are usually long after the death of their owners.
We won't focus on the details, because the article is not about that, but note that the images confirm that the thickness of the armor is not that great, especially considering that the savage helmet rests on bare shoulders. Well, while remaking shoulder pads we've found that, as in the case of the APA, the original game used three completely different armor sets (not counting the blue-eyed version of paladins or APA) for different situations. Shoulders of T-51b, which can already be seen in the gallery, recreated on the main menu and endings' render (hereinafter just "render" for T-51b, and for ARA), which used the same model of armor.
They got really huge, we even had to narrow them slightly. But when we compared them to the game sprite (which is, theoretically, also not drawn by hand) we saw that the shoulder pads are completely different, they were much better in Fallout 3, if it comes to that.
Well, then you can look at this armor in the video, namely in the news in the intro to the Fallout 1. Not only is the shoulder pads are a pillows without connection with the twisted cylinder bolts coming out from the sides of breast, so also the armor itself conjures up thoughts of a blow-up doll.
And with АРА it's not the case. Where the screams of the width reach almost the maximum value, we see the opposite picture. FNV-version, which is taken as a basis can be seen in the gallery. And look at the width of the shoulders.
And then look at this width at the main menu, Fallout 2.
It is difficult to claim something with this perspective, but the video version from the opening sequence about our friendly neighborhood strangers in masks and with guns--this version telling us that they are not so wide:
What can we say about the rendering, which was "talking head" for any *random_number_of_random_guys_in_APA*. It's even more "non-canon", citing some claiming that the shoulder pads are as wide as a Volkswagen Beetle:
By the way, who noticed that shoulder pads are asymmetrical clearly under fire from weapons requiring pulling the left arm forward?
And on the render of "blue-eyes" АРА we see quite a small hoop guard (yes, and another helmet we also see), but also the larger shoulder joints of the armor. So, the arguments and evidence of the huge solid-scapular shoulderpad-spinpad are crumbling almost like guys in black leather jackets on a way to the same guys from the Enclave. What about APA, which has the same sprites as T-51b (except the color, absent knee pads and shoulder joint)... It turns more tiny in question of shoulders and their width.
